In the wake of Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) ouster from GOP House leadership, this statement of principles, organized by Evan McMullin and Miles Taylor and signed by more than 150 prominent conservatives, announces a new political movement dedicated “to our founding ideals” and “a rebirth of the American cause.”

But it’s good news nonetheless. And it arguably should be taken as such even by liberals and progressives who understandably view the prospect of a pro-democracy center right with deep skepticism.

The signatories, who include former elected officials, federal bureaucrats and political appointees, are expected to argue that if Mr. Trump is not repudiated and disavowed, then the only option would be the creation of a third party.
