Writing a Better Future for America

The state of our union is promising. There are still major challenges facing the United States and the world. These threats, which are remarkably similar domestically and globally, affect all of us: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, global inflation, the spread of authoritarianism, and the attacks on democracy. The good news is that inspiration abounds for the future.

One need only look at the global response to Vladimir Putin’s unlawful and immoral invasion of Ukraine. The international coalition of democracies is more united than ever, and would-be tyrants are seeing first hand that their quest to destroy self-government will be met with fierce resistance. The power of liberty is on display. The western and NATO coalitions that have been formed and strengthened can also serve as examples of the types of coalitions we are building at home.

Pro-democracy Americans are also uniting against the growing threat of illiberalism. We at RAM are building that cross-partisan coalition to ensure that the right of every American to vote continues to be sacred in our nation. That is a fight that must come before any difference of policy or party.

Still, the cracks and divides in our society are growing. Dividers seek daily to widen the fissures in our politics and seed hate and bigotry for political gain. We must be real about the challenges we face. But as President Biden said last night, America is a nation that turns crisis into opportunity.

This is our chance to write a better American future, and to forge a new generation of leadership founded in principles like liberty, equality, and democracy. That is our task, every day: to Renew America.
